Welcome to the latest news on the Cast and Crew of Star Trek: Discovery
The lead character – who will be female, and likely either black or Hispanic – will be “on a journey that’s going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy,” Fuller’s revealed. “For her to truly understand something that is alien, she has to first understand herself.”
And in a Trek first, the lead character will not be the ship’s captain, but the Discovery’s Lieutenant Commander.
“When we introduce our protagonist, she is called Number One“

CBS finally announced on the 4th April 2017 that Sonequa Martin-Green is First Officer Michael Burnham of USS Discovery .
Some sites have previously assumed her character’s name was “Rainsford,” which was in fact a code name put out by the production team.

Could this be the same Tyler from Star Trek: The Original Series??

Wilson Cruz will be playing the Doctor on the U.S.S. Discovery
Known best for his role as Dr. Jekyll on Penny Dreadful, Shazad Latif was originally cast as a Klingon.
Chris Obi will be playing the Klingon captain T’Kuvma. There is a lot of mystery surrounding the Klingons on Discovery, as they don’t match the visual look of the species from the original Star Trek series and movies, nor The Next Generation. Rumor has it that these are a race of primitive Klingons, although that has not been confirmed. It will be interesting to see how the show deals with this issue.
This is the protege of T’Kuvma, and commanding officer of the Klingons. He was originally played by Shazad Latif, but is now being portrayed by actor Kenneth Mitchell.
